And yet they don't seem to solve my spam issues.

Well, as far as me concerns, they can put one permanent in my channel.

They wont have to complain about feedback then. Although it has gone down a lot since the last month, users still receive about 5 pm's an hour...

This was good enough for me to decide to take the key of the channel.

But to see that #worldchat did get hit very hard in the past, we are not complaining anymore.

Our channel is also being hammered several times PER HOUR by these bots now.

It is only a 200+ person channel, and there is no reason for massive hoards of these god damn bots to keep joining every hour.

These are a real annoyance and I wish there was something you could do about them.

if you read the entire thread, the is something you can do.

if you feel you can monitor your channel for spam/trojan bots yourself, simply contact an oper and ask them to have your channel removed from the list (yes, it is possible. if the oper in question doesn't know how, ask nicely that they request it from a spamtrap admin).

Two points:

1) If you're a channel op, you can ask for your channel not to be visited by them, but don't then complain about spamming in your channel.

2) An oper can also cut the number and frequency of visitations, although that would also cut the chances of catching your spammers.

We're not really out to get you (most of the time).

These oper bots only catch onjoin spam, one of the easiest things to catch. Doesn't do anything for the flyby's or the ones who sit and wait for a "Hi" or the ones that relay from one to another. With that being said in my opinion even the minimal help they provide isn't worth the annoyance. I also think it's backwards, the bots should stay out unless otherwise requested. And just to be clear about how to get rid of them, how many opers do we send a message in order to get rid of them? At what interval do we message them. Do we request it once a day, once a week, once a month, once a year? At what point do we stop messaging a single oper that never responds and move on to the next oper? I don't think I will lose any sleep over these questions but they do make me wonder.

Not going to get into what, much less how, but you are mistaken. I know of no "oper bot" checking for spam.

Most, if not all, MOTD's give server policies forbidding spam. Therefore, those servers are well within their rights to check for spam to whatever extent they deem appropriate, so long as it does not violate general EFnet principles.

As stated above, if you are a channel op, and your fellow ops go along with it, you can always request that your channel be checked less often or not at all (providing your channel is also in compliance with general server and EFnet practices -- see MOTD's to check that). If you're not a channel op, take it up with the ops of the channels you feel bothered in. They, after all, under EFnet general practices, are in charge of most things concerning that channel.

As to which oper to make requests of, I believe that is answered above.

ok, to beat a dead horse:

ask any oper
if they don't respond, ask another one
wash, rinse, repeat

you only have to request once. once your channel is set to 0, the bots should no longer join your channel (unless for some reason the entire channel database gets reset, which hasn't happened yet)

what works:
"excuse me. i was told that it is possible to have these spam check bots stop joining my channel. could you do this, or know who i can speak to who can do this?"

what does not work:
"hey a**hole, get the f**king oper spy bots out of my channel before i ddos your server!!"

i thought my previous answer to the question was pretty straight forward, but maybe plain english is difficult to read...

yes, the bots exist. if you don't like them, the solution has been given, many times, to have them stop joining your channel. reliving the post simply to paste new nicknames achieves nothing.
