irc from cell phone
not that i need to, but i want to be able to irc from my new cell phone if its possible.
the first time i got the wrong phone, it didn't even have java support and they said it did, so i took it back!
i think i got the wrong phone again. nokia 3595. it doesn't seem to have socket support.
before i take it back and exchange it, any ideas from anyone?
about client to use, and what phones it works on etc
like, i was reading about irssi. and one of my shell accounts has that installed, but i think i'll have to get them to install the mobile plugin, because i tried installing it in my directory and got error messages. so maybe he'll have to install it where he installed the rest of it.
i tried virca, and it wont work, i get the socket error.
oh, one more thing!! i noticed a website or 2 that you can connect to from your phone, and irc that way, but they dont go to efnet (
i think one i looked at was fusionchat.. dont remember exactly
anyone know of one for efnet? that would actually be the best and easiest i think
i think that would be a great project for someone... that knows what they're doing, unlike me

I have the nokia 6800 and can use Virca if needed.. Not the easiest way to chat.. I just use it to check up on the server. I know some other people that get on irc via the cell phones by using putty and going into a shell..

this setup will allow allow any xml-enabled browser to get online (no java required, only the ability to view a webpage).
follow the below instructions to install thttpd+php+ircg, run and configure with the ircg-php scripts in the root. the only downside to this is that all visitors to your ircg-php page will logon to irc via your webservers ip, so keep it firewalled or password protected.
1. Install SGI's State Threads Library
http://state-threads.sourceforge.net/
(Just copy st.h to /usr/include and libst.* to /usr/lib)
2. Install the event-based IRC Gateway Library

Re: irc from cell phone
One alternative is to go for a phone for which the putty SSH client has been ported, and use that to connect with unix machines (like one would through a regular shell). You'll want a phone with a recent spec screen and keyboard for that, though, such as the Nokia 9200 series (and even on that, the resolution is limited to something which looks like 40x20).lucy wrote:not that i need to, but i want to be able to irc from my new cell phone if its possible.
It works in practice, in any case.

And I thought I was bad for taking my laptop into the bathroom with me. My girlfriend just sighs and shakes her head.
Cheers!

DAMN. the day after i posted this my power went out! well not just mine but 306,000+ homes in memphis were without power. so i couldn't even go over to my friends houses to use their computers!
oh well, i survived, maybe i dont need to irc on my cell phone after all.
for one thing, alot of the cell phone towers were down too, so i couldn't use the cell phone half the time anyway.
