Technically, we're the original IRC network (as is IRCnet), so it's really in 1988 somewhere. The name "EFnet" came around in August 1990.munky wrote:according to our documents
Aug 90 - IRC splits into EFnet (Eris Free) and Anet (Anarchy)
admin, irc.umich.edu
oper, irc.servercentral.net
oper, irc.servercentral.net
So no one knows the exact date then? hehe, very odd...
On a different note... This has struck me before, that admins must have seriously disliked eris to create a network purly dedicated to be free of it, I find that very odd... especially for (these days) such a widly known network.

eris had an open, non-passworded pair of C/N lines (and likely H). Anyone could link a server to it.HM2K wrote:So no one knows the exact date then? hehe, very odd...

haha, was that sarcasm I couldn't tell, if not... I've seen a network with open C and N lines, it was a win32 unreal ircd network, it had no real formation rules or regulations, anyone could be an oper, and it was rediculous, thats why it wouldn't work... (that being one of many reasons).
thanks Hwy, oh and munky i fail to see the point in what you said... it didn't answer my question... Aug 90 isn't an exact date...

alz, maybe, but if you read the original question (though some what confusing) it seems the question about pin pointing the birthdate (creation or foundation) of EFnet...
Though I would like to know for my own reasons, I guess it'd be interesting to have a date to celebrate and call EFnet day, hehe, no matter how sad it may seem, it is actually some what amusing...
So... does anyone actually know the exact date... Anyone at all...?
