Hi!
I'm thinking about setting up an IRC-server with help from some of my friends, they've done it before.
But! Let's say I got max 500 users in there (I will guess an average of 150-200 ppl)
If they are kinda active, and I got services like chanserv and nickserv, do you guys what kinda comp I'll need to run this (specs), and how much bandwith it will use?
My guess will be that it's not required to have an extreme CPU, but focus on the pipe it's on, and the bandwith usage.
Any comments/suggestions?
Thank you
Regards

How much bandwith does a small IRC-server use?

multi processor would be a waste of time, as the ircd is most likely single threaded.
if you're doing 500 users, and everyone is playing nice, you can have a 1ghz freebsd box on your cable modem.
servercentral generally doesn't go over 1mbit unless there is a burst from a server link or ddos.
read the docs on whatever services you want to run, and see how much memory they use.
