I have only paid for a shell account once, and that was close to 10 years ago now. With so much "internet" everywhere its hard not knowing someone who can get you a "free shell" ..
Re: Free shell account providers
I do realize this is an ancient thread, however as such google is now showing this poll about how pay-for shell accounts are better.
Let me prove the poll wrong by introducing a pleasant exception, free shell account for a quick game: http://shell.tor.hu/
You get SSH, web (unlimited vhosts/subdomains/mysql db's), procmail, crontab, ftp, rsync, a relaxed environment (on annoying restrictions).
Basically it's free web/mail hosting (co-located on a gbit) coupled with a usable shell account for your projects.

Nice
it's also frowned upon by many users to have a bot in the channel making the logs available on the web. to avoid the bots being banned, you would need to ask permission from the channel operators from any channel that you wanted to integrate your service with. many websites have tried to monetize irc logs, and all have failed because in the end, either the logging bots get banned, or no one wants to read historical logs of lolcats.
