... Whatever gets the job done. For me that means some Win2k3, some GNU/Linux (gentoo and debian), and a little bit of OpenBSD.
Real Server Os's
There's no doubt that the free OS's don't stand even close to the Commercial UNIX's . AIX, Solaris, and HPUX are the best Enterprise OS's out there. HPUX fly's and is a wonderful OS, most people just don't use it enough to know it's advantages, there's a reason why it's one of the most popular Enterprise OS's out there. Also AIX is wonderful especially with being able to run linux binaries on it. The monitoring tools and all the extras in AIX make it definatley a competitor. Solaris beats them all on the front of slim'd down fast no-extras UNIX. IRIX is not meant for any kind of machine that is connected to the real world it wasn't made to be security sauvy. Irix was made for SGI workstations . It is still also a wonderful fast OS, it's too bad there isn't support enough for it and it's even more sad that SGI is moving to linux for it's Enterprise servers. Eck. All you irc'r are all blind in the freeware world. If you work everyday on decent Enterprise OS's such as these you would realize how badly linux and the BSDs really do suck. There's no good filesystem management, the kernel's are bloated and incomplete. And there's shit in there that is old and un-needed. The only freeOS that is worth a damn is NetBSD, it's actually slim, has linux binary compatiblity if your set it up and is a wonderful OS that supports more hardware than any other OS. It's sad to see it passed over all the time when it's a very *complete* well done, well supported and well developed OS.

It seems most people tend to use redhat for webservers... and by the looks of things on efnet most people seem to use freebsd for irc/ircd/shell boxes... just look on netcraft... (http://www.netcraft.com)

friend of mine will be running macos 6.0.8 on the world's slowest web server [a Mac 512Ke], and netbsd 1.6.1 on the world's slowest super computer.
