EFnet to do away with warez

Postby Pills » Sat Apr 01, 2006 3:15 pm

In a hotly contested vote, EFnet decided by a slim margin to do away with warez from its servers in entirety. Using the DALnet example, those in favor wanted a "more pure" chat network, and not one just known exclusively for illegal activities. Several DALnet admins, both who were for and against their big change a few years back, were also contacted for their input. In the end, there was a razor thin margin of two servers, and so the vote passed.

Arguments for the change usually included the following:
1) EFnet is a haven for warez and other activities that are illegal in some counties.
2) Because of this, DDoS nets are more widely spread because of naive newbies who downloaded anything they were sent.

Arguments against the change usually included the following:
1) We would lose too many users, and it would be a vast waste of resources to keep so many servers up.
2) The above argument, added with the slippery slope of EFnet totally dissolving.

The one good thing about the vote is that there were no regional united fronts, so something like the Great Split would not re-occur.

This policy goes into effect on Sunday, April 9 at 8:00 PM EDT.

Would've done something better, but I dropped the ball. Maybe next year.

How is this new rule going to be enforced? Adding of RESVs etc? And how do you know that opers wont turn a blind eye to warez activity?

We will remotely give noogies to anyone who we think is downloading something that they shouldn't.

You will then get a special "noogie mark" next to your name on your whois. We haven't come up with which symbol it will be yet, but I'm partial to ^.
