mIRC 6.1 is released. The new version has many upgrades but is very buggy. Most commonly used dlls are no longer effective on it. Many window settings have moved and it now requires registration? Looks like another IRC client is about to get some new traffic, I personally am not gonna pay to use mIRC, i'd irc through telnet first (which I do for fun sometimes).

I think I'll wait a week or so before I decide if it's 'buggy'. Also, none of my window settings changed at all.

I can't say about dll's, as I don't have any use for em.

Oh, and I paid a long time ago =]

I don't like mIRC 6.1 it sucks... majorly... its got some kind of crc check so even if you change a single byte (ie: V to X, for the version responce) it won't run... also if you rename the exe from mirc.exe to say hm2k.exe which is what I normally do so I know which mirc is which in my procs, it won't run... sounds really retarded to me...

PS.
<@fl> paying for irc sucks
Oh btw... I just found out that you only have to have mirc at the start of the filename to run it... ie: "Copy of mIRC.exe" doesn't run, where as: "mIRC Copy of.exe" does, you can also change the .exe extention to .scr or such, there's no check for that...

A bit of a pain for ircN's creators and users (and other such modded mIRC clients)

Also you only have 30 day trial with new mIRC, but it uses the old registration codes, though I doubt it can be cracked in the same way, so a keygen/serial would be the easiest thing to do... not that i'm trying to promote use of such cracks/keygens/serials etc...

I also noticed one of the major features is the new "channel favorites" (ALT+A) on the file menu, and the fact that mIRC creates a new directory called channels, which I presume are linked...

I fail to see the point of changing the version response, If someone has put the time and effort into writing something, I dont think It's much to ask for them to be credited in a lousy ctcp response.

none of the other irc clients (to my knowlege) enforce their version reply... besides I don't like people to know my client details, or use/abuse it...

hiding version reply is just a standard security through obscurity

if someone really wanted to exploit a client, it's not hard to join a channel and ctcp/msg all clients in the channel to attempt to exploit them, so it's not like security through obscurity really protects you that much. though i do change bitchx version reply in source so it replies *ix rather than the uname of the system

I agree, anyway, i've removed the CRC check now, and patched the version reply, i'm even gonna make it so I can use mIRC to patch it via /bwrite ;)

I have tried the new mIRC version, and I like it. But the fact that you have evaluation time (you have to pay) bothers me. I do not wish to pay for it, as I am not THAT addicted to IRC. But it would at the same time be nice to be able to chat to my friends there. I suppose I would just have to find another client...

People don't pay because they are addicted to IRC, there are always ways around that. People pay because they want to support Khaled (the author of mIRC) and say thanks :P
