Connecting to Efnet.. then my internet connection stops!
When I connect to an efnet server, it starts fine, but it sometimes even loses connection before the motd has completely finished being displayed. then, i can't use the internet at all until i reboot my cable modem! i've tried multiple efnet servers, and it keeps happening tonight. i tried mirc and xircon, both do it. other ircnets work (gamesurge) just fine.. only efnet!
what's wrong?
what's wrong?
no, this is not based on an uneducated assumption, but thanks for the help. i had not changed anything since the last time i went on efnet, and it used to work just fine. i did turn off my software firewall (all i had was windows xp's firewall, which i must've forgotten to take off since i reinstalled), and still it does this. i just tried it again tonight, and it did the same thing. it didn't even finish displaying the MOTD of irc.efnet.nl/6667.. at the end, it says
*** ERROR: (WSAECONNABORTED) Software caused a connection abort
*** Disconnected from irc.efnet.net
and then i can't use the internet at all until i restart my cable modem.
btw, i can connect to undernet just fine with no problems.

That error message is described here: http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/WSK-19980702-EM02.htm . It is a winsock error.mctriple wrote:*** ERROR: (WSAECONNABORTED) Software caused a connection abort

The problem is on your end. Maybe your router or your computer isn't liking the flood of information when you connect (MOTD maybe?) Or maybe there are packets being dropped between you and the server? maybe try a server that is closer to you.
again, negative. it actually happened again later that night. and just now.. just finished resynching my modem after having to turn it off and back on.
i've been connecting to irc.efnet.net, but maybe i need to find a specific server that works for me all the time. i just connected to irc.efnet.nl and it made me restart my modem before i could use the net. this server gave me problems when i started this thread, too.. i remember the ascii pot leaf in the motd.
it was absolutely not just an isp hiccup. it's happened consistently over 10 times.. connect and instantly am unable to use the net til i restart the modem. works perfectly fine, til i try to go on efnet, then.. as i've stated several times, my net connection stops until i reboot the modem. when i connect using irc.efnet.net, almost all of the servers it tries will cause this error.
additionally: i just tested the "location" suggestion mentioned above. im in central IL, and connected to irc.servercentral.net, which is located in chicago, about 2 hrs away. same problem, almost.. the motd finished displaying, then this:
End of /MOTD command.

[07:04:00] * magnar`af sets mode: +i
-
Local host: stealthninja.insightbb.com (12.221.108.172)
-
[07:05:22] * [10053] Software caused connection abort
notice that error comes up over a minute after it finished.. timed out i guess? the line above it is displayed immediately after i connect, and then i cannot join a channel, nor can i visit a webpage or use the net in any other way until i restart the modem.

I'm having exactly the same problem, efnet.demon.co.uk seems to be the only server it occurs with, and the problem is very consistent like mctriple says. I'll connect to demon, then my router will completely die on me and require a power cycle... I'm guessing it's a weird bug in my routers firmware.
Some details on my setup:
* Draytek 2600W router on a 512/256kbit ADSL connection (Eclipse are my ISP) with three IP addresses.
* I am connecting to demon with irssi on a linux machine with iptables (same problem without iptables). It is in the routers DMZ.
I have no idea why it barfs connecting to demon, which is located only about 50 minutes from here. That router has withstood pretty heavy attacks directed at my mail server. It's almost like I'm getting packeted as soon as I connect to demon. The syslog output from the router isn't all that helpful:
# perl clunkiesyslog.pl
** UDP syslog server listening on port 514 and awaiting connection...
** Accepted connection from 10.0.0.1

i'm sure it's been asked before, but do you have any software firewalls installed? or even winxp ICF? try it off when you connect, if you do.
usually a "software caused connection abort" is an error closer to the client side. if you have no firewall installed, it may be time to get in touch with the tech staff at your provider. this is usually NOT the support staff. they will be next to useless. you'll want to ask the technical staff if they have any sort of scan blocking in place on the network or in the modems (to use a very over-generalization, cable modems act a little bit like a NAT firewall). if you can't get ahold of the tech staff at your ISP, try using the whois lookup to find the noc contact at dnsstuff.com.

In God we trust,
Everyone else must have an X.509 certificate.

nope, no sort of firewall. windows' crap is off as well. has been since the day i installed winxp.
i haven't come back to this thread in a while, because i had found a server that was consistantly letting my join. irc.desync.com was always allowing me to get on without a problem. right now, however, the server isn't working, so here i am
i'll check out my isp.. but it used to work perfectly before. i've used this isp for 2 out of the last 3 years.
