Actually, it IS tradition, and one that even the new-school admins stick to. I remember a time where a server that umich had C/Ns with refused to hub us if we were hubbing another server (hobbes.kzoo.edu, IIRC). Servers can dictate what users, and servers, connect to them. Just as no one's forced t...

actually, technically, i think they are following the tradition of efnet... in the fact that efnet has few global policies. when it comes to local server bans, it is at the descretion of the /admins to say what can/can't be banned. That isn't tradition... That's the defacto fallback rule for saying...

Personally, I dislike seeing long vhosts entering and parting channels... Having said that, I do think it's a contradiction of the long standing nature of EFNet (and modern society) to prohibit the usage of freedom of expression. EFNet has long since been associated with freedom (Yes, I know the net...

Keeping out floodnets with +Ieb, would do it alright... oh...unless for some strange reason you actually wanted to keep the channel open to the general public at the same time... but who would want to do that, right? As I said on the old efnet.org forums when this issue came to ground, if +d has no...

the way i see it, there isn't much use for +d other than the "petty" uses. any other functionality (keeping out floodnets) can be done quite easily enough with +Ieb. placing a blanket +d would be similar to a blanket +b *!*@*.com or similar, with some +e's for your friends. but thats just my .02 Ke...

I could just see it now.....Banning users based upon their irc server. As server bans get added because "i don't like joe admin for irc.server.tld, so i will ban all his users" +d has its good points, but I think that all in all, people would use it for petty bans. Any ban (inclusive of +b) can be ...

i'm just curious why you're so sure thats the reason for efnet's success? i've been around a number of years too, and thats not why most of the people i know are here.... Sure, you know people on irc that aren't here for the file-swapping aspect of EFNet, that's a given... But the population of EFN...

For the record, for someone who has been around on EFNet for many years, it would appear that opers and admins seem to have forgotten what brought EFNet success and it's userbase... Now, while I don't recommend or condone it, EFNet was built on a file-trading userbase (I'll stay away from the 'w' wo...

usually you buy enough of a ups to run whatever critical systems for 10-15 minutes. just enough time to shut the machines down safely (usually you have some sort of interface that will automatically shut them down, either USB or serial). a UPS is not designed to keep a computer running during an ex...
